Staying in Touch
When you go on a trip you meet new people and want to stay in touch with them. It's not as hard to do with today's technology. You can stay in touch with all the new friends you or your family make. Anyone travelling with a disability knows how hard it can be. How can you make your UK holiday a success and manage your disability at the same time? First before you travel, you need to consult your physician and make sure your physical health will allow you to travel. You also need to make sure that you have enough medication to take along with you on your trip.
Next, you will need to know your equipment. What about their equipment? Do you know it as well as your own? Don't forget to make yourself a toolkit that includes everything you need for repairs. Should you pack your repair toolkit as a carry-on or put it in your checked luggage? Before you go on your trip, you need to do a maintenance check on your equipment. If something should happen to the equipment, you need to make sure that you know of all the vendors available at your destination that can repair.
Just in case you get an inexperienced driver, you should make sure you or someone you're with knows how to troubleshoot the lift on the van you are riding in. Make sure the baggage crew knows how to stow your wheelchair, walker, or scooter away properly. Do they know how to handle your respirator or oxygen properly?
Before you leave for your trip, make sure you prepare yourself for anything that can go wrong. Also, you should leave a copy of your travel itinerary plans with friends or family back home. Make sure that they know what to do if they don't hear from you after a certain length of time. Also, be sure that your traveling partner knows how to respond to any emergencies you may have. Call and check with your insurance to make sure your insurance company will cover you while you are out of the country. You may also want to purchase some travel insurance to cover any damages to your equipment.
You should make sure that you know your rights before you leave. You have a responsibility to know them because if you don't look out for yourself, then chances are no one else will either. After you have followed all the tips above, make sure you don't forget to enjoy your trip and have a lot of fun. After all, that is why you are taking the holiday anyway.
