It can be a terrifying feeling to discover that you are lost. It is even more upsetting when happens during vacation traveling. One good way to ensure that this doesn't happen is to use maps and guides of the local area.
Most holidaymakers bring along an itinerary on their travels so why not bring along a map, too. Mark your map with all of the destinations that you plan on visiting. This will help you understand where you are going to have to go in relation to where you are staying. It will also help you decide how you should travel from location to location.
If taxis are your choice of transportation, you will only need to mark the key locations like your hotel and the places you want to see. If, on the other hand, you are taking public transport, then you will want to mark your hotel, the bus/train stops, and the locations you want to see that day. If you choose to walk, then you should mark your hotel, the locations you want to see, and the path you should take.
Always be aware of your surroundings and memorize any recognizable features such as street names, landmarks, and buildings. That way, if you happen to get lost, it will be a lot easier to find your way back. If you do get lost, first you should look at your map and try to figure out where you are. The easiest way to do this is to locate the street that you are on. Once you find that, you will have a good general idea as to where you are. Compare where you are to where you want to go and then you will know which way you should go. Keep checking your map as you pass streets to make sure you are following the correct route and see how much closer you are to your original destination.
When you are driving it is extremely important to make sure you have a good plan and your route is marked on your map. It is bad driving practice to try and figure out turns and manoeuvres while you are driving. It might be a good idea for you to rent a car that is equipped with a satellite navigation system. If you must stop and ask for directions, make sure you write them down and follow them. You can even get the person you asked to mark it on your map.
